Aorere and Howick claim Sevens crowns


Aorere College and Howick College are the surprise winners of this year’s Auckland Secondary Schools Sevens Tournament, in the boys and girl’s competitions respectively.

Both are first time winners and will qualify for the National Condor Sevens in December.

30 teams took part across the two divisions, with 16 boys team and 14 girl's.

For Aorere College it was a big turnaround after a first round 33-5 loss at the hands of Mount Albert Grammar.

But from their their built solidly, and beat heavy-hitters St Peters and Kelston Boys to progress to the final against Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart had been in fine form throughout the day but Aorere held on in a tense final to win 10-5.

Howick, who won the Condor Under 15 title in 2015 impressed throughout, especially on defence, conceding just two tries in their first three matches.

They faced Southern Cross in the final and were pushed right to the final whistle, but held on to win 21-17.

In the boy’s division, Sacred Heart, Mt Albert, Kelston and Mt Roskill have all qualified for Nationals, while Southern Cross, Mt Albert and Mt Roskill have qualified in the girl’s.

The National Condor Sevens will be hosted by Sacred Heart, kicking off on December 2nd.
