Changes introduced to Junior Rugby

Two exciting changes will be introduced to Auckland Rugby junior grades in 2017 with an eye on enhancing the rugby experience for all players and their families.

The changes were developed by the Junior Rugby Committee (JRC), made up of representatives from each junior club across the Union.

The JRC, along with Auckland Rugby staff, undertook extensive research within New Zealand and other countries to identify best practice for junior rugby.

In 2017, players who traditionally played in Under 9s and Under 10s will merge to form a ‘half field rugby’ grade that incorporates four weight divisions.

Club Representative rugby will be introduced on one Sunday a month as a competitive option for Under 12s and Under 13s.

Junior Rugby Manager Andrew Elvidge said the changes are based around making sure rugby is enjoyed by all.

“We are dedicated to making rugby for everyone,” said Elvidge.

“These changes to half field rugby will mean players are coming up against like-sized opposition which should encourage participation.”

Weight grades for half field rugby (players born in 2007 and 2008) are Under 35kg, Under 40kg, Under 50kg and Under 60kg.

The introduction of Club Representative Rugby on Sundays creates an exciting opportunity for players looking for more competition.

“We want to promote balanced rugby on Saturday with enjoyment of the game at the forefront; it will create a better rugby experience for all,” said Elvidge.

There will no longer be a finals series, this moving to the representative competition. Clubs will be welcome to enter one team per grade, neighbouring clubs would be able to merge to enter teams if required.

Under 12 weight restrictions remain at 49kg and 74kg for capped. At Under 13 restricted weight grade is Under 55kg, while capped is extended to 100kg.

Elvidge extended his thanks on behalf of Auckland Rugby to the JRC for the ongoing input and support they provide to the junior game in Auckland.
