POOL A

College Rifles v Waitemata

The Sir Fred Allen Challenge Cup was on the line in Remuera today, and at the halftime break it could have been going anywhere. The second stanza however, saw College Rifles hold their nerve and maintain their unbeaten start to the season. In a game dominated by kickers and plenty of rain, there was little to cheer about in the way of a spectacle. Waitemata will be disappointed to come away empty-handed after producing several good results in recent weeks.

College Rifles 20 (C Flavell try, O Mausia 5 pen)

Waitemata 6 (K Siemsen 2 pen) Halftime: 3 - 3

Suburbs v Manukau Rovers

Suburbs came in to today on the back of promising form from the past few weeks of the competition. They picked up where they left off, recording a comprehensive victory over a gallant Manukau side, who were arguably the dominant team at set-piece. A double to winger Bruno Tuivai was well-received by the home supporters, as Suburbs look to continue moving toward a third straight Gallaher Shield Final appearance.

Suburbs 36 (A Craigie, L Cunis, E Thompson, B Tuivai 2, J Adams tries, C Perry 3 conv)

Manukau 6 (S Hafoka 2 pen) Halftime: 22 - 6

Mt Wellington v Te Papapa

Mt Wellington have had a difficult run in the competition up to this point and despite today’s result, will feel they’re making positive steps in the right direction. Te Papapa will feel this result has been a few weeks coming having pushed a number of sides close throughout the season. The most pleasing aspect for Te Papapa Head Coach Taniela Namoa is likely to be the defensive discipline of his side after holding Mt Wellington out for the full 80 minutes.

Te Papapa 27 (T Vea, M Vakameilalo, V Finau 2 tries, S Mafi 2 conv, S Mafi pen)

Mt Wellington 0 Halftime: 12 - 0

Grammar TEC v Papatoetoe

Arguably the most important match of the round with both sides ‘Top 8’ aspirations aided significantly by a win. The home side got off to a flyer, scoring within the opening 30 seconds. Papatoetoe weren’t overly rattled however, and could of put away a number of opportunities soon after. The floodgates opened somewhat in the second-half as both sides traded tries before Grammar TEC were able to put the game out of reach with a couple of late penalties. Papatoetoe ensured they were still in the hunt for a ‘Top 8’ berth with a late try securing two bonus points.

Grammar TEC 32 (V Tuungafasi, P Kafusi, TJ Vaega, B Ward tries, M Lam 2, K Hifo conv, M Lam, K Hifo pen)

Papatoetoe 27 (F Finau, S Loamanu, V Lolohea 2 tries, D Leuila 2 conv, D Leuila 1 pen) Halftime: 15 - 3

POOL B

Ponsonby v Eden

Both teams were 5 from 5 heading in to today’s clash, but it was Ponsonby who were able to maintain their perfect start to 2018. Having beaten Eden in the final of the Waka Nathan Challenge Cup, Ponies picked up where they left off by shooting out of the gates early to lead 17-0 at the break. Eden were unable to get much going in attack throughout the game and a solitary try was all they had to show for their efforts. Ponsonby proved they are the real deal this season by closing out the match 27-5.

Ponsonby 27 (M Siliko 2, T Fox-Matamua, R Khan tries, J Trainor 2 conv, J Trainor pen)

Eden 5 (S Taavao try) Halftime: 17 - 0

Waitakere v Marist

Marist travelled to West Auckland today looking to claim a much-needed win. The first half was a tight, tetchy affair with neither side wanting to give the other an advantage by making a mistake. Marist were able to pull away in the second spell but will be disappointed to not have secured a four try bonus point late on.

Marist 25 (M Filiga, S Sione 2 tries, C Pamatatau 2 conv, C Pamatatau 2 pen)

Waitakere 3 (J Rimoni pen) Halftime: 3 - 3

Pakuranga v University

Historically, this has always been a match-up with plenty of feeling from both sides. Today was no different with Varsity doing the halftime/fulltime double over their rivals. The experience of the likes of Brenton Helleur provided University with a cool head late in the game when Pakuranga were threatening a comeback. Both sides will have one-eye on the next round already you’ suspect, as they look to mount a challenge for the Gallaher Shield in 2108.

University 37 (B Helleur, S Afoa, N Harris, M Valukoro, U Fetalaiga tries, H Miller 2, T Latu  conv, H Miller 2 pen)

Pakuranga 24 (D Spooner, H Ahokovi, L Namoa tries, H Ahokovi 3 conv, H Ahokovi pen) Halftime: 20 - 10

East Tamaki v Otahuhu

The battle of two South clubs today was never going to see a backward step taken by either team. Halftime saw the sides locked at 8 apiece, but home ground advantage got East Tamaki through for a deserved win over their local rivals. Otahuhu will be disappointed to have not gone on in the second spell having fought so valiantly to stay in the match throughout the first 40 minutes.

East Tamaki 22 (T Iosua, F Afereti, T Moala tries, T Iosua 2 conv, T Iosua pen)

Otahuhu 13 (J Va’atiuola 2 tries, M Pesamino pen) Halftime: 8 - 8

Premier Women

Glenfield v Ponsonby

Glenfield proved too strong for the Ponsonby Fillies in what were pretty wet conditions on the North Shore. Ponsonby will be pleased with their efforts throughout the full 80 minutes as they continue to come to grips with Premier rugby. Glenfield will be buoyed by the result and will look to use it as a springboard heading into next week’s match.

Ponsonby 17

Glenfield 24

College Rifles v Manurewa

If this was Monopoly then you get the feeling College Rifles may have used their ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card. Weather like today’s is often a great equaliser and this is a result that was a little too close for comfort for the home side. On the flip side, Manurewa were good value for large parts of the match and will feel a little disappointed knowing they could of potentially claimed all four points.

Marist v East Coast Bays

Marist bounced back in ruthless fashion today after going down to College Rifles last weekend. East Coast Bays were unable to match the reigning premiers for skill and commitment in the wet, but will know they came up against a side hurting from a close loss last weekend. Marist will know their season is well and truly back-on-track as they look to build toward next Saturday.
