Brent Metson elected Chair of Auckland Rugby Union Board

Brent Metson has been elected as Chair of Auckland Rugby, succeeding former Chair Stu Mather following Mather’s election to the NZ Rugby Board.

Metson, a highly respected figure in the Auckland sports community, brings a wealth of leadership experience and an unwavering passion for sport to this pivotal governance role. With a track record in sports organisations, Brent Metson is widely recognised for his unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership skills.

Most recently serving as the Chair of the Auckland Rugby Council of Delegates, he guided the council's decision-making process and effectively represented the interests of the diverse set of clubs and stakeholders.

Metson's love for sports is evident, from his early days playing rugby at Pakuranga College, his deep-seated passion for sailing with the Auckland Sailing Club, through to pulling on the Ponsonby Puritans president grade jersey, involvement in sport has been a constant for Brent.

Brent entry into sport governance began when his children played junior club rugby for Ponsonby. This led him to assume the role of Ponsonby Junior Rugby Committee Chair in 2010, dedicating five years of service to the position. In 2015, Metson became an integral part of the Council of Delegates, where he has devoted the last eight years to advancing Auckland Rugby club rugby competitions.

"Governance is a true passion of mine " said Metson. "I firmly believe in building better boards, not just within the Auckland Rugby board itself, but also within the Council of Delegates and our member clubs’ boards too. We must strive to become more resilient and capable.”

Metson fully acknowledges the importance of his role as Chair in overseeing the organisation's overall strategic and governance. Metson commented, "Auckland Rugby has a large role across all levels of the game and there are challenges which we must be bold and brave to advance. Coming from the council of delegates, and being involved junior club rugby, I feel connected to every level of our game. The challenge excites me.”
