2016 season celebrated at Auckland Rugby Awards

The 2016 Auckland Rugby Union Awards were held at Eden Park last night, recognising the efforts of teams, players, coaches and volunteers across the club and representative season.

Captain Simon Hickey was named the Mitre 10 Cup player of the year after leading from the front throughout the 2016 campaign, while team mate Sam Prattley picked up the Mitre 10 Cup Team Man of the Year along with the prestigious Sir Fred Allen Supreme Award for epitomosing the Auckland Rugby values.

Suburbs’ Stefan Crooks and Gary Donovan received the two biggest off-field prizes, the Barrie Connell Memorial and Ash Edwards Memorial respectively. Crook’s efforts for the past four years as Chairman were recognised along with his work to engage the local community and grow the club.

Donovan’s award was a popular choice on the evening, his service to rugby spans six decades and his work at both Suburbs and in various capacities at Auckland Rugby made him a worthy recipient.

The Gallaher Shield winning club also picked up the Best and Fairest Club Player to Carl Perry, the Jordan Rosebowl and Charlie McAlister was acknowledged as the winning coach.

Elsewhere Manukau Rovers claimed two big player awards, for Club Rookie – Michael Kaivelata and Club Player of the Year, Siosiua Kaifa.
