A delegation from Dream Rugby Fukuoka was officially welcomed to Auckland yesterday with a Mayoral Reception at the council chambers.
A group of 12 delegates from Auckland’s sister city are in New Zealand, being hosted by Auckland Rugby, as they prepare to host the Rugby World Cup 2019.
Auckland Rugby Chairman Mike Donovan addressed the function welcoming a range of guests.
“While the genesis of the visit of our friends from Fukuoka is rugby based, the fact Fukuoka is Auckland’s sister city is recognized by the generosity of Mayor Goff in not only inviting rugby people to these chambers, but also a diverse group of people who have interests in promoting the friendship between Japan and New Zealand.”
Mayor Phil Goff spoke of the 30 years of friendships between the cities when welcoming the guests.
“This visit is about promoting friendship and our relationship and promoting our cultural and commercial links but there is no doubt rugby will be centre stage,” said Mayor Goff.
The delegation were greeted into the country by a stirring haka at the Auckland Airport on Monday morning by the Auckland Rugby Pro Sport students.
Since then they have had meetings with Auckland Rugby, Eden Park, ATEED and New Zealand Rugby as they look to learn from the 2011 Rugby World Cup hosting experiences.
Mr Tanaka, Presdient of the Fukuoka Prefecture Rugby Union also spoke, thanking Mayor Goff for the reception and hospitality.
Gifts were exchanged between the parties, with Mayor Goff and Mr Tanaka receiving personalized Auckland jerseys, while the Fukuoka delegation offered traditional Japanese gifts.
