A huge weekend looms for sevens in Auckland.
Saturday will see the annual Auckland club sevens tournament, to be held at Waitemata Park and will be the final chance for players to impress the rep men’s and women’s selectors before squad are named for the December regional qualifiers and January nationals. Details and draws will follow.
This follows on from last weekend’s successful staging of the Ranga Sevens in Pakuranga, won by Eden in the men’s division.
On Sunday, back at Waitemata Park, the spotlight falls squarely on female athletes keen to give sevens a go, with an open trial from 1pm. This trial is not just for novices, and some experienced sevens girls will be keen to add to their match fitness in the shortened version of the game. Any standout rookies could, however, force their way into the Auckland team under coach Crystal Kaua, a former Black Ferns Sevens rep.
Watch out for the next Kayla McAlister or Portia Woodman.
