The launch of an independent complaints management service is the latest initiative to come from New Zealand Rugby as a result of the 2017 Respect and Responsibility (R&R) Review.
The service is available both online and via an 0800 phone service that will provide ready access for people to raise complaints regarding inappropriate conduct in rugby.
The Auckland Rugby Union (ARU) is firm supporter of the initiative and sees the investment in the community as a way of ensuring concerns are able to be communicated confidentially and with the knowledge they will be investigated and acted upon.
ARU CEO, Jarrod Bear, believes the service will provide multiple benefits to the rugby community in Auckland.
“This initiative supports Auckland Rugby’s commitment to providing safe and enjoyable rugby experiences to all those within our community. Rugby is and needs to remain, a game for all.”
“Auckland Rugby will be supporting NZR in their efforts regarding Respect & Responsibility to ensure our community are both aware and educated on this independent service being available to them.”
NZR Chief Executive Steve Tew said the independent service was part of New Zealand Rugby’s commitment to create an upstanding and inclusive rugby environment throughout the country.
“Having an independent complaints management system will ensure all concerns are heard, documented, investigated and decisions are made about the appropriate course of action if required.”
“People can feel reassured that their concerns will be acted upon with good intent.”
Highly regarded employment lawyer Steph Dyhrberg has been appointed by NZR as the independent manager of the complaints process.
Ms Dyhrberg said she welcomed the opportunity to support rugby in New Zealand to be the best it can be in this regard and lead change within rugby.
“My primary role is to provide an independent service that can identify the nature of any complaint and ensure good process is used to resolve issues as fairly and effectively as possible.”
