DEVELOPMENT & AGE GRADE

How Far Can
You Go?

Development and age grade rugby builds the foundation for every player. From first skills to advanced performance, our programmes are designed to support growth at every stage.
HOW THE PROGRAMME WORKS
Auckland Rugby’s development programmes are designed to support players as they grow, combining skill development, game understanding, and progression through each stage of the pathway.

The High Performance Academy

Players enter the High Performance Academy through Provincial Union Development Contracts, beginning a structured pathway toward elite rugby. Since 2010, the programme has consistently delivered strong results, with around 80% of players progressing to NPC and FPC, and many continuing on to Super Rugby. Most achieve representative selection within three years of finishing school or entering the programme. Along the way, players also push for selection in New Zealand age-grade teams, competing at the highest level for their age group. The pathway demands commitment, discipline and resilience. Players are supported to understand what is required to succeed and given clear direction on how to achieve their goals, both on and off the field.

The Development Programme

The programme is designed to prepare players for the next stage of their rugby careers, from New Zealand Under 20s through to NPC, FPC and ultimately professional rugby. Built on the NZRU 6 Pillar Development Model, Auckland Rugby delivers a progressive, high-performance environment that consistently develops players ready for representative selection. A strong emphasis is placed on holistic development, ensuring players grow both on and off the field. This includes physical performance, game understanding, nutrition, mental skills, and personal and professional development. Players are expected to take ownership of their progression, maintaining high standards across training, lifestyle and preparation. This includes making positive health choices, managing commitments, and balancing rugby with work or study. By the time players progress to professional rugby, they have the tools, knowledge and confidence to perform at the highest level.
