Who Was David Gallaher?
David Gallaher was a pioneer of New Zealand rugby and captain of the legendary 1905–06 All Blacks. Known for his leadership and innovation, he helped shape the modern game and left a lasting impact on rugby in Auckland and beyond. After serving in the Boer War, Gallaher returned to rugby, leading Auckland and New Zealand with distinction before later contributing as a coach and selector. He was killed in action during World War I in 1917. Today, his name lives on through the Shield, honouring his legacy and contribution to the game.
