Progress & Resilience
The Coleman Shield reflects the growth of women’s rugby in Auckland. Since its introduction, the competition has developed into a strong and competitive grade, producing high-quality rugby and players progressing to higher honours. While Marist Brothers Old Boys and College Rifles have been dominant at times, other clubs have also claimed the Shield, showing the depth across the competition. Today, it remains a key part of Auckland Rugby and an important platform for the women’s game.
The Coleman Family
The Coleman Shield was donated in 1998 by the Coleman family, recognising the need to support and grow women’s rugby in Auckland. At the time, women’s rugby was still developing, with limited resources and visibility. The introduction of the Shield provided a dedicated prize for the top women’s competition and helped elevate the profile of the game. The impact of that contribution is still seen today, with the Coleman Shield now firmly established as the premier honour in Auckland women’s club rugby.
